I work at a discount grocery store where there is often only one cashier ringing items. We put closed signs at the end of each checklane that’s not being used, and a close a metal gate in the aisle that says “DO NOT ENTER” to prevent shoplifting. Without fail, at least three customers a day frantically ask which lane is open. On my last day there, I am planning on saying “I’ll bet if you think REALLY hard you’ll probably choose the right one!”

I had a customer come up to me at 10:30 at night while I’m ten feet from the register with the bright light illuminating the number one and say, “I’m ready to checkout.” I looked at her and said….”okay I’ll help you on checkstand number one.” and as I walk to the register I notice she walks over to checkstand five where she had all of her groceries laid out on the belt. ….let’s see. there’s seven checkstands and four self checkouts with closed signs, one of which has a light illuminating the number. i think i’ll pick this random one over here.
